Driving precautions
In Bali, and on most of the other small islands of Indonesia, a motorbike has always been and remains the main way to get from point A to point B. The possibilities of public transport are very limited, it is not always convenient to wait for a taxi every time, and this puts you in a dependent position, also the warm and dry climate is very conducive to riding a motorcycle or scooter. Therefore, literally everyone drives a bike here - from an early age to a ripe old age. And, of course, this is an obvious solution for a tourist - also rent a motorcycle or scooter to easily move around the island.
But not all beginner drivers find it easy to switch to a bike, it is still very different from the usual driving of a car. Often, girls feel insecure while driving, which attracts the attention of foes. In the most touristy areas, from time to time, unpleasant incidents can occur - provocations on the roads, robberies, the most common - on the move, the passenger's phone is snatched or a bag is pulled off his shoulder.
In order not to find yourself in such a situation, it is important to know some life hacks that will help you not look like "easy prey" for robbers and scammers.
General recommendation - try not to lose vigilance, control the situation and react in advance to suspicious things. For example, if an incomprehensible bike clearly begins to follow you, you can park somewhere, skip it forward and thereby get out of an uncomfortable position.
Here are some specific tips to help you hedge and avoid unpleasant situations:
  • 1
If you drive slowly and hesitantly, plan your trips so as not to go back alone through empty streets, especially at night.
  • 2
Advice for girls: dress modestly - very short pants, open shoulders, loose hair can attract unnecessary attention (also especially important in the dark).
  • 3
Another tip for girls: Bring a jacket or raincoat with you, as well as pants or a sarong to cover your bare legs at night, try to look as unattractive as possible in the dark.
  • 4
It is better to put the bag in the trunk, put the backpack at your feet, and never hide your phone in the back pocket of denim shorts, from there it is easy for intruders to snatch it even while driving.
  • 5
We also do not recommend using the simplest phone mounts on the steering wheel of the motorbike - it is quite easy to pick up the phone while driving (or even break the mount).
  • 6
If someone is trying to stop you in an unusual situation (and this is not the police or a waiter who wants to return your forgotten phone, for example), then sometimes it is better to avoid unnecessary conversations and try to leave, especially if you feel unsafe at that moment.
Many people in Bali are convinced that thoughts materialize, and in part this is true. "Think only about the good things, and unpleasant situations will bypass you." However, in addition to being positive, it will be very helpful to follow the precautions listed above when driving a scooter or motorcycle. Then your trip will be remembered only for positive emotions!
